German is related to both English and Dutch, and is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union. It is spoken in Germany, Austria, a large portion of Switzerland, the majority of Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. It is also spoken by many people of Germanic descent in communities worldwide, including unsuspected places far away from Germany like Chile, Bolivia, and Venezuela.
